Cayuga Lakn, how lovely yet Thy waters seem to me; I'vo vvamler'd fat, and ne'er havo net A Oem in so mtich beauty aet, A scène so sweet and t'iee. Long yeare ago, when wiliiness still Reign'd o'er this magie view, Then o'er thy wave with a woodmau's sVifl, A flashing oar, and joyous wil), I paddl'ed iho bark oanoo, Thy bnnks woro fringed with the olm nncl pino, The oak and syenmore; Whoso crowns were wreath'd with many avine Wliich cast a (had ia u waving line, Beueath the pebbled Bhore, The graceful swan in covo and bey, Flock'd o'er the silver flood ; On poisml wings nn& measnr'd wny, The Fisher Hnwk in quest of prey, Ia mid air liov'ring siood. The Doo and spott.ed Fawn were here To drink the fonntain puro ; Or wash their track from the foe in the renr, And gazed fit my biirque without any foar, From arm of mine secure. As Genii in some fiiiry land Watch'd o'er the fatrs of men, An Kagle on yon jatting strand, From 11 Icalless tree, on ov'ry hnnd, O'erluokcd the lea and glen. Oh! thmi tliis heart of mine wrs light, No care was on my brow ; My youthful hopea had never a blight, The future was bathing a gleam as bright. As the light upon thee now. Cayuga Lake, how lovely yet, Thy wntera seem to me ; l'Ve wauder'd far, and ne'er have met, A Gem in so much beauty set, A sceue so sweet and free.
