We extract dio following from an eloquent Fourtli of July address delivered by Bishop Doane at Burlington College: The vvorld is stirred, and tossed, and agitaied like a seething caldron. An hour upturna a throne. Another, and the new republic is the cráter of a new volcano. Another, and perliaps a throne is cast op, vviih its fierce and fiery flood. No man can say, tliis day, what nation on the continent of Europe is nol involved in civil war. No man say what governfncnl is noc the creatnre and prey of a mad mob. No man can say, what insiinets of nature are desecraled, what chariliea of life are tramplod under loot, what holiest places are profaned. Il seeins the trial honr of Europe ; and, it may be, of the world. In human view, the salient points of hope, for Truih and Christianity, as charged wiih botb, and indispensable to tbeir existence, are, novv, America and England. lfGod keep lis at peace, hold lis erec.t n our posilion with thfi natioris, and make us faithful to oor trust for man, the issue, witb His blessings, is an issue full of hope. A new order of things imy be established, on a betlcr basis, and to better pur poses. Freedom secured by Law. Order enforced by Love. - Patriolism pmified by Religión. The World subjected to the Cross. Tirr.e made the foretaste of Immortality. That t may be so, let us combine our efforis. Let us devote the day to thoughts and offices of love. Let us devote our lives to acts and influences of peace. And, for ourselves, and for our brothera of the blood, and in the faith, let the one Irife bareafter ever be, whicb shall do our most to rcalize the angel's bymn, and bring beaven down to earth : " Glory be to God on high : and on canh peace, vood will to meo!" OíF Lorenzo Dow defined a death-bed repcnlance to be burning out ihe candle oflif'e ia the service ofthedcvil and the snuffiii tbe Lord's face.
