This society and its auxiliarles have held, f rom the beginning, that i t was tha üuty ofchristian churches to withdraw fellowship, after the due admonition, from slaveholder?, as persons whose conduct ia immoral; and who, berefore,Bhpuld never be recognized us christiuns in good standing, until they cease to rob and oppress their poor brethren. Yourcoramittee rejoice to record tiie fact that such views, and the correspondent practice, have made rapid progresa the past year. 1. Quite a nuraber of local churches, in this state, of the Babtist, Congregationül, and Freewiil Baptist denominations, have taken the scripturai ground of refusing any longer to receive slaveholdeis Lo their puipits and communion, Many jthers, in other States, have done the same. 2. Sevcral ecclesiastical bodics n our State) arnong others the Essex North and Vliddlesex Union (Cong.) association?, ïavc attempted to influence siaveholdiug rofessors to "do justice" by corresponlence. The able and aifeclionate appeal f the formerbody to the Charleston, South Carolina, Union Presbytery, coraposed exensively of 'Northern men with Southern rinci)les," and praclices, too, wased with contempt! We regard tliis evcnt with the more interest, because the Esscx North Association has been hilherto silent on the subject. We trust the extiibitionof anti-christian feeling, on the part oí men educated, chiefly,in thetr very nidst, (at Andover Theological Seminary) ,vill iead them and others totake more da :ided abolition ground in respect to church iction. The correspondence of the Geiiral Conference of Mainc, with southern eclesiástica, resulted in prompt and thorugh action, on the part ofthat body. Simlar correspondence has been carried on, he past year, by other bodies, ia Vermont Ltid other States, the reault of whicb io . iotyet developed.
