It isgratifying to find public üttention awaking to these facis. "The entire cotton erop is much less than thre annual produciive industry of the single state of Massachuseits! Yct for twenty years has ihi's-cottun interest, a mere (raction of vrealth and strengih of the nation, set itself up to govern the whole. lt has 'alternately threatened, combined, nulhfied and conspired totmake the grain growing and manufacturing interests of the nation, subservient to its domineering and eelfish spirit. "Congres9 legislated for cotton; Mr. Biddle and the banks d6counted for cotton; and men traded in their fellow men for cotton. And, what is the result?
