-At ihe recentcharter election, a bnnd of rioters, en lied the Spartan Band, made a general attack on the Jrish population. Tlie Irih railied their forcee, and commenced an attack almost without discrimination on all they met. Some of the time from ono to two thousand were engaged ín the fight, und many were droadfufiy beaten. The contest lasted with intermissions, till late at night. Several buildings were complete ly riddled, and tho windows of the House of Bishop Hughes were bioken in. The Cathredral was saved by the presence of nn armed forcé. A number of persons have been arrested for particípala) in the riot, hut had been discharged for want of testiniony.
