Tbcre are abcut six thousand local ministers in the methodist episcopal chckch in the United States Man}' of thig clas3 of men have been, nnJ slill 'are distinguished for their ability and usefulness in the cbui'ck. A much larger number of this body are abolitioniBts than among thetraveling preachera; probably froni the fact that thcy are less under the influence of Episcopio, and the "authoritibs of the chduch" have but little influence over them. They are geuerally men who think and act for thcmselves, and have dono much to. advance the Anti Slavery cause in the M. E. Chuiich, and elsewhere. iJisnop Hedding. in a discourse which ho has reccntly written and published, rcfers to some of this class of men t!as following for tbe lovcs and fishes," as "'floating about this country on othcr br.smcss than preaching tce gospel - operafing on subject injurions to the Churcl--!:virj o-'J the hospitahties of the people," and further represents "whole societies as leagued with these ïocal preachers to opérate against the church," and finally comes to the conclusión: "That if there be any principies in the government of our church which can be made to bearon such men and heir deeds, they ought to be applied; if their be no such principies, it is hoped the next General Conference will devise some means by wich such evils may be arrested, for if they are allowed to go on, it is impossible to foresee to whatexteat they may produce mischief, and eveiy evil work." Let all the 'Local Preachers and Societies.' who favor Abolitiouism. and are resolved in the strength of God, to resist every kind of oppression- METHODIST EPISCOPAL not accep. ted - look out for a new law ada pted to their circumstances, at the next General Conference. Yon jH havo thereby warning, uncl if you do not feel the weight ot somc r.ew and oppressive law after 1844, it will not be because Bishop Hedding has not recommended it, nor because slavery does not nsU it.
