The Committee of Expenditures in Conpress have ascertained, Ihat within five years from the outbreak of hostilities in Florida, frnm the lst Jan. 1836 to the lst Jan. 1841, "There were employed in the transportaron service, 6even hundred and thirty-' even stearn boals, brigs and schooners. M;iny of them were employed at a per d em, until the price of their hire had quedrupled the sum at which originally they could have been purehased. The elenmbout, John Crowell, was hired at the price of three hundred dollars a day, and her expenses and insurrnnce. She wasnoi worth fiftf-en thnusand dollars, nnd one hundrrd dollars a day would have been an extravagant hire for hor. For the nntire period she was in service, the Government pnid eighty-two th.ousand five-hiináred dbllaré." Could süch extorfion and wastefulnoss have heen practieed in any other than a slaveholdiv.g country?.
