A word a? to the consistency of liberty men. "T'ike up the Philantropist," sajslheGnzette; "tnke up the Freeman, and what do we find'? Violent philipics, bitter denunciations, levelled against. the whig party, without ever a word against thoee who are in truth the real enemies of civil liberty." This is a mistake. Again and sgnin have we denounced thf detestable servility of the dpmocrat party - and if we have not done so more frequently, it has been bpcause we have ihoughr, "Ephnam was joïned to his idols; lot him alone." In regard to the whigs, it has bepn different. Their apostacy frocn right principie has nut been so shameless. A few blushes remain to teil of the virtue not quite lost. There are some righfs which they are unwillmg fo abandon. But, iheir ground is that ofcompromise. They contend for a righl, but ngree not to use it. The hberty ol'Bpeech and tlie pr es mu6t not be abridged,6ui,it ïsinexpedient to exercise it against slavery. The rieht to petition must be maintained, bvt it will never do to grant the prayer of the petitioners Slavery is wrong, Liberty is the right of every man, bvt this is not the time to ngitate such abstractions. íSuch a party, it is evident, must be more dangerous to liberty, than an open -Javery party. The man who would shelter a wrong, by declaring you liave no right to discuss t, makes you hate it, becauso it abridpes your liberty. He who concedes to you the rieht, but argue against its use, awaKens no indignation, and will more likely sncceed in arresting examination than the ot her. Henee it ip, that the Logan Gazette itself.has saidthat theoutrages ofsouthern men were Cf-lculated to muliip'y aboliionists. So the outrages of the democratie parJy, will produce the same effect, while the cumpromisps of the whigs, by conceding the right of discussion, but. denyjng its expe'lie.ncy, are caiculated to induce multitudes to forego the use of this right, who, were it denied,
