a very long and able document, wnttcn by D. L. Child. lías been forvvarded to Congress from Northampton, and every member of Congress supplied wilh a copy. h goes over tbo entire anti-slavery ground, and prays redress on every point. ín rcference to an insurrection ofthe slaves, we find the following: 10. We complain that ice are placed in the dilemma of disoheyihg the díctales of conscicnce, or the reqvisUions oftaw in respect tof agilice slaves, and insúrrection of slavcs. To be compelled to seizc and to massacre innocent and injured men, because they desire liberty, and because they make those heroic efforts and sacrifices to obtain it, which we celébrate as the height of human virtue and glory of our pilgrim and revolufionary ancestors, is a servitude more degrading than the physical bondage ofthe slave. Our situation, in this respect, is similar to tloat of the Russian serf, compelled to slaughter the oppre3sed Poles, or to conduct them to the vast prison house of Siberia. Indeed, ou:s is the worst case of the two; because. as Mr. Jefferson justly said, "one bour" of soutíicrn "bondage is fraught with more evil than ages of that winch we3' and the pcople of Polanu !!rose in rebellion to oppose." As freemen, we have a right to be relieven1 from this servitude. more galling, if properly viewcd, to the mind, than chains to to the body; and we claim to be so relieved.
