- Last lall this Counly gavea very few votes for Liherty - nbout a dozen w believe. Since then, a County Anti-Shverv Society has been formeel, of which J. Howari s Presiiient. and Win. VVheeler, Wm. Woodíufi'. and C. Gurney, are a Corresponding Com Mr. Stuarr, of Detroit, recently deliv cred a few lectures tliere, and a g"neral ínteres haa been awakened. An indication of this is íbimd in the spirit of opposition which h:is beer aroused. We understand a gentleman of the name of Ketchum, a clergymcn of the Dutcli Re formed Church.has taken the field in favor of eter nal slaverVjand is now giving a course of lectures toconvince the people of that quarter that the Bi b!e authorizes and commnnds the holding ofslave - that slaves are tbe happiesi people in the worli -that abolitionists are fanatics. traitors, &c. &c Sincc Mr. Ketchum and his friends are dètermih cd on opposition, it is desirable they should exer themselves with zeal: for anti-slavery principies never gnin as fast as when they can fairly mea sure strenqth with error. If they cannot endure discussion, let them go down. The more truth of any kind is talked about. the botter it will be understood, and more fïrmly bolievcd. and he mus bc very ignorant of Jniman nature, who has not discovered that the world isguverned by talkins. writing and printing. One of the diflicult points towards indoctrinating a community with the truth is to get the attention of individuals concenlrated upon it. Professed public opposition admirably secures this result. An issue is raised. and after hearing a question discussed, the indifierence of people is gone, and they are rendy to take sides. Henee the knowing ones who hate the cause of liberty, avoid discussion as much as possible. Thenoiaers proceedcd on this principio in establishing the Congressional gags; altbough, in that matter, thoy over-rcached themselves by raising a new issue on the right of petition. We presume Mr. Ketchum will advance the cause faster by his opposition, than he could by liis au'vocacy. But thereis somethingrevohing in the public defence of slnvcry as a Gospel Institución by a ninister of the Gospel. Make it a Gospol instuuion, and it becomes perpetual, and will ast hrough all coming ages. Again, yliowing he Gospel to sanction slavery. it knows nothn g of black slavcry. Thcslaves ofApostoic tinie3 were of the same complexión with their masiers. God is no respecter of persona, and he slavery of the wliilc laborers of Michigan, for ny thingthat appears to the contrary, would acord with his will, as muchas that of men of any ther complexión. While such men as Mr. K etchum remain at the North. we shall liever eed any other answer to the common interrogaon, "Why dontyou go to the South?" than to oint tliem to our own citizens who stand ready o enslave their fellow citizens assoon as circum tances shall render it expedient, and who claim o possess an express commission froni the Alnighty Creator for the perpetration of the crime. [CPThe Washington Correspondent ot the Joston Courier asserts that President Tyler is bout to despatch a sf.cret agkxt to the West ndiesto prevent the abolition of slavery in Cuba.
