The Emiindpufer has an 'labórate uncí well wntten article on tfio duty of Benevolent So- cielies in reference to The vvriter sffirms thnt the Bible, Traer, Educa lion, Tempernnce and Missionary Societie are purely self conducting, self-perpetuating asspciaüons, whi?h' offer themselves to th church?s and individuals as merety ngents t do tlieir work. They have n'a claim on tb confidence or aid of individuals, or chnrehes except what lies in the irtrinsio excellence of their orgnnizaüon, and the character and management of the individuals having their direction. Beyond this they have no claim, and no sacrednesR, and no authority whatever.- It is propory therefore, that their doings shouid be subjected to public sctuliny. In reference to Mi8sionaries he says:"A slaveholding missionary, teaching n slaveholding or a slave toleratinjr gospel, and orgonizinnr slaveholding and sluve tolernting chtvche?, is as trnly a reproach on Chrisüanity and tlie teacher of ano! her gospel, as is the theatre-goinjr, or spirit-tirinking, or the Sabbath brpaking, or the lust-indulging, or the frand comtïiitting misionary. Indeed he is a cominitting and a inflicting missionary ii the liighest and worst sense. - For lúe is the wholesale plunder of men's all - themselves, their wive, their little babes, tlicirall. To commission and send out him is to sanctiojl his frand aQ(L.his wronjr, and to send out aalse and spurious gospel as iruly as if the Sabbath breaker, or the lust-indulger, or the spirit-drinker were sent. Nor can any inissionary board sond out such an ono, either at home jr abroad, except os it so far for'h, turns aside and proves faUe to its own legitímate objocts - the sending of the gospe! to the !estitute."lie coníends that neutrality is impossible, and all that abolitionists ask of tho Benevolent Socioties is to adopt a position of actual antagonism to slavery, which may be nmrifested in word or deed, but which shall bn substantiully this - "That in the solicitation aud reception of funds, this Society does no ask, and will not knowingly receive the gain of oppression in promoting its work." Sucl action as this will be perfectly satisfactory t all abolitionists. No board of inquisitors nee be appointed to examine mt the sonrces o the contributions made: all they ask is tha slaveholding be treated by the directors o: niissions, like stcaliog, intemperance, profani ty, or any other sin.flDr. Nelson, President of the M1S6Í0 Instituto at Quincy, Illinois, has been travelling recenlly in Kentucky, where he formerly preached onri held slaves. Four persons in that State had lasely liberated their slaves, being ne hundred in number. Those near the borders of Ohio vere treated with more indulgenc e than formerly to preveis their running avvay. The Doctor suggests that it will 6oon be for the interest of the alaveholders on the border to have a gradual emancipation act passed , as the only means pf ert ie ing the slaves to rema in.
