I. Stofmv pnssions with a pen of steel, W-rite their record on the human honrt; Grows the traeen - fires of sin onnual - Deep and decpur as iheyears depart. II. Perish hopes that holy made tsyouth; Fades the proinisc of its golden prime; JMeek affections. Bympathiesand truth, Swc-epoih overall the tide of crime! III. Downward pres-s?th evermore the soul That ia wed9ed to its hideous sin - Downward madly to the dreadfu! goal, Spirits hating purity must win. IV. In ïhe path that leadeih from the light. Every foot-fnll soundeth like n knell! Darker o'er the spirit gathers night - BlucUest Iiorrors thick around it dweil. V. Lost the briglitncssof its earüerday, All its Ionging8 for the Holy lost, L.ke a wreek, whose helm is torn away, On the waves of Error eee it tost! VI.
