The Dr. was probably as ignorant of the fncts of the case, as those who will be misled by him. Laws have always exisled in Virginia against the instruc tion of slaves, and their various amendmeiits have for thir'y years being growing mnre 8evere. In 1819 a law was passed agninst the instruciion of 'slaves and free iiegroef," makmg 20 lashes 'the penalty of their atlendance on any school for learning them to read or write, eitier in the day time or night.' - How then did a New York Abolition society, by sending traéis to Virginia, cause this law to be passed when no such sociely existed ti'l 14 years after? In 1831 nnolher law was passed for punishing those who should teach elaves or colored persons publicJy or pivateiy for pay; but this was two vean üefore any ïbolition society existed m New York, and before the cause had exerted any influence upon this country.
