Poetry: God's Altar
First published anonymously in the May 1843 issue of The Universalist and Ladies' Repository.
Not where the organ-tones ore loudly pealing Thro' the cathedral aisles or nrclicsdim - Nor whcn upon the ear is softly Btcnüng, The low, sweel cadenee of the evening hymn - Not where the sound of pontpous prayer ascendeth And hundred voices echo it ngain - Not where the knee in soleinn mockery bendclh, And careless Iips pronounce a loud amen! Not where the sacramental cup o'erflowing, Presenta a symbol of the Saviour's blood - But in the heart wilfa puro aflection glowing, Ãs the Iruo aliar of the living God! Thcrc hatli he renred his own most holy shrine, And consecraied it with Love Divine!
