The alfair occurred at a political meeting, where Mr. Clay calIedMr. Brown a HarTtowhich Mr.Brown retorted he was a damned liar. Tney rushed to each other. but having been separate d by the spectators, Brown fired a pistol at Clay, while some other perron struck him over the head. - Clay, thinking himself mortolly wounded, drew l.is bowie knife, ano rushing on Brown, dug out one of h8 oyes, cut off an ear, and othcrwise muilnicd him. He is alive, howcver, and ia j.xpected to recover. Such are the results of Slaveholding. Slavery is a system of war, and ihe conqiierers nre obliged to go armed, and it is not surpriting tliat their violent pa3sions and insolent demeanorshould often ;ause them to use iheir deadly weapons on each other. Mr. Clay is a Slaveholdcr, a man of affluence, and highly esteetned. He is a decided advocate of gradual einancipation.
