During last year, (1842) the revenue derived by the Department frora the North was $600,000 more than its ex)enditure - white in the South, the expenditures exceeded the receipts, by $571,000. The total lengtli of the mail routes in the free states, is 70,390 miles - the toal transportations, 20,506,882: and the otal annual cost, #1,598,875V In the lave states, the length of route is 75,636,niles - transportaron, 14,489,643, and he annual rate of cost $1,575,500. - While the North is taxed over half a milion annually to keep the Department in operation at the South, we can look for nothing but exorbitant postages, and corcive measures to have newspapers, magazines, &c. conveyed by mail, at an expense ten times as great as would be ncurred if sent by the expresses.
