An item for Dr. Dewey. - A writer in the Christian World, gives an interesting account of the Massachusetts State prison under its excellent warden, Mr. Robison. He states the following fact: "There were several colored men in prison, and among them one slave, who escaped some years ago from bondage. - He was committed for a petty theñ, and he says he had much rather remain there. than ever again be reduced to slavery! - He thinkshimself fortúnate in exchanging Southern opprcssion for a Northern frison He fares better, has less labor to perform, and is not Hable to be sold to pay kis jailfeesl It is well known that the southern States do not punish slaves by sending them to their penitentiaries, because, if they. did, they would commit crimes on purpose to be sent there! Important to the whole World. - There are at the present moment, sav3 the New York Aurora, ihree great questions of human interest - relnting both to the spiritual and temporral welfare of mankind - which remain undecided. When they are solved, the world wil) be happy, and we bhall know tuho struck Billy Patlerson. The following are the que6tions, in the order of comparative interest. Duel. - A duel was fought this morning, with rifles, between a young man named Julián May, a son of Dr. May, Df this city, said to be about 22 years oá, and a young man named Cochran, also of this city, aged about 20 years. - Phe latter feil, mortally wounded, it is said, in the head. The duel was fought it the Chain Bridge, in Virginia, near Georgetown. - Madisonian, 16. Rose, at Silver Lakè, Penn. maintains ten thousand sheep. A few day since, the proprietor sold at one time to a manufacturer at Ithaca, 300. bales of wool,each bale weighing from 150 to 180 Iba. at 38 cents a pound.
