Eoitors: The following account of the commenceiient and prog-ress of the "Anti-Slavery :auee" in thie piace, was prepared, read, nnd approved of by the society, and directed to be published in the Signal of Liberty. The fi.st movemem in this place, in the Anti-Slavery cause, was a lecture at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Jan. 1L, 1344, by Wm. E. Platt, Agent, and travelling leclurer for the Michigan State Anti-Sluvery Society. The plain fucts brought to view in this lecUire, awakened the minds of nome who had, before, been dormant upon the subject. The next action, wa-s an Auti-Slavery Sermon, by Rev. Hermon Smith, a clergyman of the Free Will Baptist connection, delivered in the Methodist Episcopal Church early in February. He also gave another dkcourse, on the sanie subject, at the saine place, on the 9th of February, at which time it was understood to be very doubtful, whether the church could be had for another Anti-Slavery meeting. The use of the church, being sub?e quently, po&itively refused, the next discourse was given by Hubbard Smiih, at the house of H. B Muncil, near the churcb, on the Evening of Fabruary 14. The discours was Hstened to, by a very crowded audience. A committee of five was appoiuted, conswting of the following gentlemen, viz: John Deland, Farly McLouth, Sylvester R. Hathaway, Jackson Hoag, and Lew is Larnbert, with instructions, to draft a preamble and constitution for an Anli-Slavery Society, and report the same at the next meeting. February 19, 1844, meeting held at the honse of H. B. Muncil. After an address froiu Hubbard Smith, the meeting called John DeL8nd to the Chair, when the comraittee reported a preamble and constitution, which was unanimously adopted: and the ame received the nameo of thirty four persons, who thereby at the first orgauizatioa of tbe Society became membera.
