-The Corigressof Texas, on some overtures being made by Mr. Upshur, took up the subject of annexation, and adoptedsome resol utions as the basis of a treaty. The ibllowing are said to be the principal features: 1. She to be ut once admitted as a state. 2. Her public debt to be assutned. 3. She to retain her public lands. 4. She to have an extra Congressional Representative or tvvo. 5. A part of her anny to be embodied in our own. 6. The like as to her navy. - Oin. Herald. flCr" At the late New York city election the vote slood, Whig, 5,204 Democratie, 19,859 Native American, 24,176 It would seem by this that the Whigs are nearly extinct in the city, or that they are fighting under a new banner. flC?3 Cassius M. Clay says that the Christian churches in Kentucky "theonly professed teachers of moráis"- are slaveholders. Cassius, who is not a memberof the Christian church, has emancipated his slaves, and the vsst body of his counirymen say - 'It is right - well done!' Will the Christian Church never be shamed into right action by the almost unanimousvoice of mankind? The last General Assembly thought any expression of opinión on the subject not for "the edification of the churchi!" We presume the General Conventions of the Baptist and Methodist denominations, which meet this year, will be of the same opinión. (t5 The Whigs of Detroit have built a new Clay Club House, and dedicated it. dCf" In the Eastern states, they are putting the rumsellers through the law, without fear or favor. In Taunton,Mass. five of them were fined respectively, includingcosts, $241,02, $408,83, $120,53, $77,79, and $320,60. Four of them paid the fines; the other was sent to jail.
