AmoRg the unquestionabiy useful publications 01 cue aay, is Dr. Alcott's, Teacher of Health..' Every number contain9 valuable inFor raation concerning the human syetem, and suggesfiens in regaid to babitB of living. The May No., among other useful articles, contains one entitled. Tobacco and the Tketh, which Bhould he read by all who are inclined to use tho vile weed' for the toothache or any thing else. The wiiter says, tliat the opinión, prevailing so exteneively, that tobaeco preserves the teeth, is fallacious - that, on the conirary, it hastens Iheii decay. "The eoundness of the teeth will elways bearan exact proportion to the soundness and firmness of the gums, and of the lining mem brane of the mouth, stomach, and alimentary canal. But, that tobáceo makes the gurns loose and spnngy, nnd weakens the lining membrane of the whole alimentary canal, ie as certain as any fact in physiology. The teeth of those who use tobáceo, are in a less perfect etste of preservation than those of other people - I mean those .vhoae habits are no worse in other respecte.' Tobacco prevents the teeth of some chewers acliing for a time, because it stupifies the nerves; and there are caeei of old chewers, whose teeth, eo farasthey tre not worn out, are free from decay. But such cases are about as rare as "the so much boasted of caee of long-lived intemperance." "But there is one thing usually observed m those persons who use tobáceo, even vvhen the teeth do not really decay. They wear out very fast. Dr. Mussey says he has verified the truth of this statement not only by observation on the mouth of 'some scores of individuals in our own communities but also on the months of several individuals belonging to the Séneca and St. Francois tribe of Indians. Dr. Rush mfinlions a man in Philadelphia wbo lost all his teeth by smoking, and Dr. Warren, of Boston, tesüfies that the common.belief, that tobaeco 13 beneficial to the tectbjis entirely erroneous; but that by ils poieoning ard reJaxing qualitiea it is positively injurious.'
