VVhen John G. Whittief, thï Quaker Poet, was quite young, he wrote some verses in praise of Henry Oay, which have had an immense circolation. He has recently come out i the Esse Transcript, deprecating their further use, inasmuch as they are now very far fron expressing the sëntiments of his heart in reference to the moral character of Mr. Clay. He says they have been read andsuug in numerous assemblies of slare holders, where the autlior would hav been instantly lynched by the brutal com" pany. Whittier is now a decided politícal opponent of Mr. Clay, on accoirot of his moral character, and because he a Slavkholdeb akd Slave-trade,dCf Garrison, the Abolhionist, ís also a poet of considerable forcé and vigor. - When he was in jail in Bahimore for a libel on some slave merchante he wrote some beautiful stanzas in praise of Frelinghuysen, for his eloquent defence of Indian rights. These lines are wow publishing in the Whig papers, and Garrison has inserted n notice of thei in the Lib erator, stating that he was deceived in reference to Mr. Freïrnghuysen's character, and while his opinión ofhiseloquence remflins unchanged, he now regards him as crnïy a partial philanthropist ot contracted piety, who exerts a deadly influence against the whole colored race, by his support of the abominable schema of Colonization.
