We are rejoiced to find tliaf many of our must influenual citizens, disgusted with the almost daily scènes of drunkenness that disfrace oor Village, the inevitable consequences of lega lized dramshops, Rre considering what is the moet effeclual remedy for ihis enormousevil. Our own position on this matter needs no definition. We go for the abolition of this public curse, by every proper and iighieous means. A writer in the Argus hae proposed to test the eontiment of the citizens through the ballot box, at the coming Charter Election. He save: lPermit me then through the medum of your columns, to euggest lo our cilizens, and especinlly tlie members of our temperance so cieties, the proptiety of drying up some of the 8ources of inteniperance-of diminishing the ninber of dram 6hops and groceries, those sinka of moral corruption nnd vice, whïch appear on almost every cornei of our streets. - This can be done by eïecting for our village officers only temperance men - men who wil] not, for a few paltry shillings, license such establishment, to deal out "distilled damnation" to the degradation and ruin of multitudes, - who will not sell induJgences to rob the simple of their heallh, weakh and honor, their families of comfort, and their children of bread. Can we, as philanthropists, remain inert and not move a finger nor uttera word, to puta stop tosucí eviis, to 6uch moral ulcera upon the body of our c'tizene, ulcere which continua lly festpr and emit floods of profanity, obscenity, and iniquity through our 6treete? Will not the temperance aocteties of this village appoint eome time for a discus&ion of this subject; and f they should deern it expedient, (as doubllese they wonld,) makea nominalion of officere, to be eupported at the coming villnge election, who will use their power and influence for the good of mankind? Such a reform as wo need only requires a concentraled action of the friendsof lelorm. - Let temperance men but corry out the prin ciples of their pledges, in di6countenancing the use of intoxicating drinks at the ballot box as well as every where else, and the work is done.'' We find in the State Journal the following notice of a Temperance meeting which all the friends of the cause are invited to attend. TEMPERANCE MEETING. ► A Temperance Meeting will be held at the Court House on Sundny afternoon next, at 5 o'clock. The friends of temperance are rcquested to ottend. O Gov.
