Polk On The Tariff
Mr. Polk has again tÃefined his position on the Tariff. Hereisan extract from a letter of his dated Jone 19, 1841. "I amin favor of a tariff for reveniie, such o one as will yieÃd a sufficient amount to the Treasury to defray the expenses of Government economically administered. Jn adjusting the details of a reverme tariff, I have sanctioned teretof ore such moderate discriminating daties, as toould produce the amount of rerenv-e nefed. and at ikt same time affnrd reasonuble incidental peotedion to our komc industry. I am opposed 10 a tanff for protection merely, and not for revenue.
