ivin. jüiUiTun:- j. am a su usen Der te I this abolilion paper; and admiro its opposilion to human slavery. Uut during the " past few weeks my mind has been callee to the important fact tiiat its editorial articles are eatcutated to promo te the clec tion of Polk and Dallas. It abuses Clay and tiie YV'higs, kecps standing under its editorial hcad, certain paragraphs intending to injurc Mr. Cloy - while no hint ever jsjüttered ag.-iinst Polk, or Pol k's favorito project of annextion. Clay and Polk are bofh slaveholders. Rut 'while ftië Jatter will annex Texas, if elected, the 'fórmer wil! go agninst the measure. it isa good rule of philosophy and moráis, which requires u.s to choose the least of two cvils, w hen we must choose onc or I the other. Clay or Polk (one or the other) must be President. Which shall wc have, Clay, who will defeat annexaüon, or Polk, who will secure annexation? ï, for one, shall not he.sifatc in my choce. AN AI10LITI0N1ST. W cut the abovo f rom the Oakland Gazetle, the Whig paper of Pontiac - l'he writer professes to be a subscriber to the Signa!. We sheuld think he could not be a very attentive reader of its columns, or he would not have stated so many gross untruths respecting it in so short an artielc. Just enumérate them: 1. "-tí abuses Clay and the Whigs." - Have we ever made statements respecting Mr. Clay or the Whigs that were un:rue? Or have we refused a hearing to hose who would correct our errars? 2. "It keeps slandingunder its editorialhead certain parngraphs intending to jnjure Mr. Clay." VVC e.xpcct that if they betrue, they will have their appropriate ef. fect. Are lus friendsafraid that truth will injure liis prospects? Have therc not been some "paragraphs" there respecting Polk and Dallas? 3. "No hint is ever uttered against Polk, or Polk's favorite project of Annexation." Now this is an atrocious, falsehood, as every reader of the Signal knows. Have we not been against An-. nexation íYom the first number of this paper? Have. we not said that Polk was a slaveholder- that he was a zealous opponent of Liberty principies- that he was Linworthy of the suflrages.of freemen- and that his party, if successful, would be a great Slavery Party, beyond the hope of reformation - and that it was already fully pledged against the sacred cause oí Hnman Freedom, and for the growth of Slavery? VVhat more could we say?4. He says Clay wil] defeat Annex, ation." This isa matter of opinión. Ir our view, nothing will be so effectual te defeat it as a large Liberty vote at the coming election. ■ 5: í'Its editorial articles are calculated to promote the election of Polk and Dallas." They are not calculated to promote the.succcss of eithcr party. We teil the truth of both parties, without fear or favor, and if these trutlis are more unfavorable to the VVhigs thnn to their opponents, it is their misfortune to have so bada cause. We advise our readers not io vote for Clay or Polk, but to come out frora both parties, and'be separate. The reason.why we discuss 'the most with the Whigs is because ihey are always attacking us. This very artiele, and its publication in a VVhig paper, with its abounding falsehoods, is an instance of the warfare that meets tis from them all. However, as we mean tobecandid, we give the wri'.er credit for uttering two trüths, in representingthat the election of both Polk and Clay would be "evijLs."- We fully bclieve itj and therefore we givc our influence for a man whose election will be a blesslng to his country. Vote for a man whö is an acknowledgëd :e?7" Never! . We wou-Jd sooner "rcfüse to vole at all. Yet this writer not only intends to act thus foolishly, but hopes to induce ofhers to do the same!
