Rev. C. T. Torrey
It appears that this gentleman, not being able to obtain bail, made an attempt to escape from the Baltimore prison, but was detectèd, or rather betrayed, and removed to another cell and put in irons. His counsel, S. P. Andrews, has returned to Boslon. His trial before the Maryland tribunal comes on in October. This attempt to escape is considered unwise by many of his friends, as it will prëjudice the mass of the Maryland people against him. But however that be, it is to be rememberedjhe is imprisoned fob. no crime, but on a charge of performing one of the commonest offices of humanity. Unnecessary, Martyrdom ainong felons, in a filthy prison, consumed by a burning fever, is not such a delightful state as to be readily chosen by poor human nature.
