The Whigs of New England have be labored Mr. Birney and hts friends as fu riously as those of Michigan. Severa articles containing false statements hav ing appeared in the Boston Atlas, the leading Whig paper of New England Mr. Birney addressed the Editors a note correcting their errors. This was pub lished, with editorial comments. speaking of "kis Birney" as lla heartles$ 'hypócrite and dcmagogvc," with other epithcts to match these. The effect of this was a reaction favorable to Mr. Birney. Thousands vvho would not vote for him now, yet believed hira to be honest, sincere and without deceit. Such were disgust ed with the unmerited abuse hcaped upon him. The prime mover in this enterprise of destroying Mr. Birney's political character seems to have been Mr. Jacob M. Howard, a gentleman not unknown to our readers by reputation. A letter purporting to be f rom him was published in the Boston Morning Chronicle, with the following expianation:"The letter was copied, by a friend of ours from a document then in the hands of Mr. Pevear, of Ro.xbury, purporting to be the original of a letter to the Honorable Robert C. Winthrop, the represenlative in Congress from ihecityof Boston. Mr. Winthrop, it was said. had passed the letter around for the purpose of letting it be nsed in convincing the incorrigible abolitionists that Birney is truly a "Locoloco." We suppose tín's is such a publication of the letter as fully authorizes us to give it additional currency: Detroit, Oct. 7, 1844. "Dear 8 ir - Mr. James G. Birney has teen nommated by the Locofocos of Sagnaw, for a seat in the Legislature of the State. I send you a number of the De;roit Advertiser, coniaining the proceedngs of the Democratie convention at which he was nominated. He has accepted thenomination AND IS FULLY COMMITTED TO THE LOCOS, exceptas to annexation, PK RH APS. "THERE IS NOEARTHLY DOUBT OFALLTHIS. USE IT, THENÍ- IT WILL INFLUENCE TWENTY THOUSAND VOTES IN THE NORTH. I have addressed a note to the editor of the Atlas. Yours truly, J. M." HOWARD. Hon. R. C. Winthrop, Boston, Mass." Mr. Birney spoke at several places in Vlassachusetts and New York, and is ex. ected to arrive in Detroit to-day or tomo rro w. Whatever designs the original 1 gators of this story may have had, it will esult lavorably to Mr. Birney. Every Whig paper in the country now introluces him to its readers. We know the ntroduction is not a favorable on e, but it gives the party a chance in some measure to speak for bimself, and do away their unfavorable insinuations. The number of vbtes Mr. Birney will lose on account of this Whig clamor will be very few, or none, while the "sober second thought" of the people will do him ampie justice. - We were struck the other day with the remark of a shrewd, wily, veteran politician. Said he, substantially, "tne Whigs of Detroit have not managed this matter right. They should have accused Mr. Birney of something Ihat they can make the people believe! You can'l make folks believe that he is an underhanded., designing hypocrite, because it is not in accordance with bis character; and you can'l make such a charge stick to Mm"05 The VVhig papers are much horrifiec withaslory tbat tho Locofoco proprietor or the Slave Pen at Washington has raised o Polk and Dallas ñag within ils walls. Well, what of it? It is natural that the slavt dealers should want Texas, and os Polk talk? the sinaghtesl that way, they prefer him. Bui how comen there to be a Slave Pen in Wash ngton, after a Whigs Congress Iiave sat two years in fight cf it? Answer, ye "favorable party," who vote for Henry Clay, who says Conirresscannot rightfully "'interfcre'' - don't mistake thö word-cannot INTERFERE with the abolition of Slavery in the District without the consent of Virginia and Maryland. Shoold eilher State refuse aseent for a thousand yeare, the Slave Pen must reniain. O the charming consistency ot' süch Whig doctrines!! O0 Among the evidences that Mr. Birney is a "Locofoco," (he Detroit Advertiser publiebedan nlledged statement of Mr. B. that he was a ('Jrffeisonian Danocral''1. Thip, we appre.'iend, js not very conclusive.although lold to Mr. Driggs, and sworn to by him. - On our side, we tnight, with equal propriety, present the following as conclusivo evidence of a "Coalition Completed" between the Whigs and Locofocos, and the Adveriiser gone over to Polk!!! "The Whigg stand on the old Democratie plntform of Jt-fferson, Mudison and Monroe. Tlteir principies, measures, nnd policy, are the principies, measures, and policy of the old' DcmocracxfW- Detroit Adi. Oct. 23, 1314.
