(jy The Argus finds fault with Mr. Birney for stating that Polk áió not receive a inajority Of all the votes cast in the Union, ind calle on him to correct the error through the SÏgnal of' Liberty. It might be wel] enough to firat atcertain whether there be any error which necdB correction. We believe it is now afreed on 11 hands that excluding South Carolina," which gave no Presidential, vote the electora being chosen by the Lf-gislature, the whole vote stood thus: ForClay, 1,297,912 Polk, 1,336,196 .Birney,,. 62,127 Thus Polk lacks 23,343 votes of having a tnajority of alj, accordmg to otir Sturing, and Mr. Birney's statement waa correct. But t'.ie Arjus claim 25,000 mpjority in South Carolina, where no votes were directly given for President. It appears to us that this is a great majorky to claim in that State, and the statement s unsupuorted, eo 'ar as we know, by ny data. We have the impression that there re material restrictions on the right of suffrage in that State. 05" An attempt to kidnap a colored man was lately made ut Harri&burg Pa. He was knocked down, choked, gaged, and dragged iuto a BteWíSnpretence of being a runaway lave. ■ A gieat excitement took place. The colored man was released by the magistrale, and warrant having been issued againat the viflains f.'rkirnapping, they were held to bail in the pumof il,CüO. Bnt they decamped next day, Jeaving iheir friend in a fix. It is said that tjbe ehouting by the crowds in the treets when tiw colored man was released exceeded al( calculatton, and was a camión to negro a tea Ie ra.
