Some weeks sincewe published anable letter of Willinm Goodell n nnswer to the opinions promulgated by Gerrit Smiih, ih.it the Liberty party lias strictly butone object - the abolition of slavcry - and that it is, ond was designed to be, merci y atemporary We thought the views of Mr. Goodell to be, in the main, right nnd just. Mr. Sraith has sincc rcjoined to Mr. Goodell, and we ivc the following extract, conlains the substanco of his views, thatour readers may have both sides of the question. "1 said, that the Liberty is temporary. You will, perhaps, be surprised lo learn, that it has been, and isyet,my belief, that ii will never oblain the reins of Government - and that it will never, indeed, comprise a large rninority of the American voters. 1 have often made the remark, that, had one hundred Üiousand votes been cast by the Liberty Party last Fall, Congress wouid not have voled to annex Texas; and that should two hundred thojsand be cast by it next Fall, the peaceful and speedy destruction of American slavery would then be sure. The Northern Dortions of the Democratie and Whig arties would not continue, in the face of wo hundred thousand Liberty Party votes, o be the proslavery servants of the proslavery South. Henee - and not to make t a party of mili ons - have I, from the first labored so hard toswell with all possible rapidity the numbers of the Liberty Party. I dread the effect upon the Liberty Party of the idea, that t is a permanent larty. This idea will be favored by the Utempts of yoursclf and others to add other objects to the one object of the party. I have, always, flattered mysolf, that the Liberty Party would be incomparably purer than other political parties; and ihat it would be so, not mainly because of its humane and holy object; but,or, because, froin Us necessarily brief endurance, it would hoid out little or no inducement to the ambitious and selfish to join it. Ere we have enrolled in the Liberty Party one tenth of the voters of the Nation, other political parties, which, looking afterthe interests of the Nation, have a more permanent character, will have taken its good work out of lts hands, to accornplish it themselves. There wijl be no Liberty Party Presidents - no Liberty Party Governors; - and, ere the Liberty Party shall have elected a dozen members of Congress, our Northern politicians, as faithful toconform tothechanges of public sentiment, as other weathcrcocks are to the changes of the winds, will be shouting forti) our doctrines to the top of their voices. I would, that, so far as this is consistent vith the wise pursuit of its object, the plans and policy of the Liberty Party might besuch, that no selfish oflice-seeker should be tempted to join it. We need such disinterested and self-denying men, who are willing to quit their great pnrties, and all hopesof political preferment, and connect themselves with a little, derided, and hated party, which promises no other reward to its adherents than the consciousness of having done their duAlthough you believe that the Federal Government has direct power over all parts of American slavery, and I believe, that it has not over slavery in the original thirteen States; I, notwithstanding, hold, that, were that Government to act up to thefull measure ol antislavery letter and antislavery spirit of the Constitution, every part of American slavery would thereby be, either directly, or consequentially, abolished." We tliink time will show that Slavery will die less easily than Mr. Smith has sunposed: that the servility of both the proslavery parties to the Slave Power will be grealer than he anticipates: and that a national contest with the monster will yet take place, and in thecontroversy the present distinctions of the Whig and Democratie parties will have but little influence. ft'r3' George Bancroft, the historian, in h is capacity as Secretary of the Navy, has become a regulator of hair, beards and whiskers. A late circular has the following orders: "Commanding officers of squadrons, stations and vessels are hereby requested to exact obedience to the existing regulations, prescribing the manner in which the hair ind beards of officers shall be vvorn."QJ0 The disaster and loss of life and property on board the Swallow is attributed by the papers to the intemperance of the pilot. A bar was kept on board the boat, and on a voyoge tip the river a day or two previous to the calamity, a gentleman counted sixty-nine glasses of liquor that were sold at the bar in the space of an hour. 05a" Anthony Ten Eyck Esq. of Deroit, has been appointed U. S. Commisioner to the Sandwich Islands. (t5 The Whig vote in Connecticut feil oflf 3,272 from last Spring: the Democratie, 5,212; and the Liberty vote gained 111.
