The arrivnl of tlic U. S. squadron uni der Com. Stockton at Galveslon occasioned great elation of pirits among tho TexI ans. Gen. Houston and his family have 1 nrrived at New Orleans on their way to visit Gen. Jackson, wliose health is said to bc improving. Gen. Houston made a speech in New Orleans on Texns aflairs, avowing hitnsclf for annexaüon. But the Southerners ask if hebe in earnest, why he should have left his country at such a criticnl time, where his great influence raight have been exertcdstrongly for. the measure. The Legislature of Texas, if ve remember rightly, was called to meet on the 16th o June. But the last advices bringthc proclama tion of President Jones, calling a Conventton to consider the proposition of Annexation. The proclamation sets forth, that whereas "the pcople of Texas have evinced a decided wish that prompt and definite action should be had" on the propositions of the United States, and whereas no authority is given by the Texan constitution to cali a convention for changing theorganic law - neverthcless, the President, being desirous of giving direction and effect to the public wil], recommends to the citizens that an election for "deputies" to a convention be held in the different counties on the 4th of June. The delegates are reqttested to meet on the Fourth of July, "for the purpose of considering theproposition of annexation, and any other proposition which may be made concerning the nationality of the Republic.5'
