Why thus lonjrin?, tlms fofcvcr sighing, For the far off, unattained and dim; Whüc the beautiful, all around thee lyinfe OffcrB up ts low perpetual hymn? Wouldst thou listen to ite gentle teaching, AH thy restless yearnings it would still; Leaf and flower nnd laden bce are preachihgj Thinc own sphere, tho' humble, firat :o fill Poor indeed thou must bc, if lourd thee Thou no ray of Hghtand j.y can'st throw; If no eilken cord of loyc hath bom.d thee To some litüe world tlirongh wenl and woe. If no 'mr eyee thy fond love can brighten- No fond voices ansver to thine own; If no tirothcr's sorrow thou const lightcn, By dnily sympatliy and genlle tone. Not by deeds that win tho crowd's applaueo, Not by works that givethee word's renown, Not by martyrdom, or vaunted crosses, Canet thou win and wear the immor.tal crown Daily 6trnggling i-hough unloved and lonely, Every day a rich reward will give; Thou wiltfind,by liearty etriviiig only. And truly loving, thou canst truly live.Doet thou revel in the rosy moriing, Wlien all nature hailö the lord of liglit, And his Fmile the moimtain tops adorninpf, Robes jon fmgrant field3 ti radiance bright? Other hands mny grapp the field and forest, Proud propr, etors in pomp may ehine- But with fervent lovc if thou adorest, Thou art weahhier- all the world is tinne! Yet if thro' eartlfö wide domains thou rovest, Sifliing Hint they are nol thino nlone, Not those fair fieMs, but thyself ihou lovesl, And their beauty and thy worlii aro gene. Nnture wenrs the colorB of t!ie fpiril; Sweetly to her worshippers Ehesinge; All the glow, the yrace she dotli inhorit, Round her trusling child phe fondly flüigs.
