A writer in the Detroit rree rress has i sensible article in favor of selling the Rnilronds to a company, because they are ind wil! bo unprofitable to the State, be:ause the proceeds would nearly pny up ;he State debt. and becnuse the transportaron of passenger and goods is not the legitímate business of a Stnte. It ia said :here are 4,000 miles of Railroad in the (Jnited States, and Michigan is the only State that owns and manages a Railroad. In all the States, the Internal Improvements made by States have resulied disastrously, with the single exception of the Erie Canal. But the lateral cañáis of New York, which have cost millions, do not yield an ncome of one per cent. - The writei cites the ense of Pennsylvania, whose public works do not yield two per cent, while those of Ohio are no better, and Maryland, Indiana, and Illinois, with heavy debts incurrcd for Internal Improvements, have received scarcelyany income. All these States, being heavilv in debt, are tberefore heavily taxed. - Michigan, at present, is following in their footsteps.
