Centervílle April 8th, 1846. Having uoticed in your paper a few dnys since,Qn nrticle calling the attention of the committee of five appointed nt the late Anniversary ofthe Michigan State Anti SInvery Society, to consider and address the public upon the questions involved in a portion of the Report of the Executive Committee of the Society, as alsoin Mr. Birney's letter laid before the Society and since published, I feel cnlled upon as a member of that committee to respond'to your cali. It will be recollccted by those who nttendcd the convention ofthe society, thatI look the ground in discussing the Report of the Ex. Com. on the question of adopting that portion of it, rccommending to the Liberty party to take distinct ground on some of the politica] questions agitating othcr parties, and pointing out some of those grounds of action, that, although individunlly concurring with most of the views there taken, yet, inasmuch as wc could not anticípate, in referencelo many if not most of tliem, whal would be our true policy when slavery should cense, it was premature to agitate other questions of mere expediency, to the danger of being drawn off .oo much from the great one idea and thus distracting our counsels - and cndangenng the harmonyofour action and our influenceon the great question. And allhough theso views, havo yet, by no means lost their importance - nay - although, they have still a strong itnpression upon my mind - yet, havingamined the subject with much care - nnd deeply reflected upon the importance of right action, and fiuding too, that many of the most intelligent, eornest and sincere of our friends disagree with the views I at first took in thïs matter - 1 have come to the conclusión that at present, I cannot conscientiously join in ar. address defending decidedly, the positions assumed in the resolutions upon which thecommittee were ra6ed. 1 have consulted two other member of the committee who agree with me - nnd this is certainly n suflicient reason why the address, so far as we are concerned, has not been and will nol Ie forthcoming.
