Thero is one consideraron exhibiting instrong light the guilt of our nation, which ought not to ba forgotten. lt is in evidence beyond. dispute that we cominenced the war by invading the territory of Mexico. But admitting that it was so,- that our title to Texas to the Rio Grande was clear and unquestionable,- irhat then ? When Matamorns was taken we had full possession of all that toe claimed, and not an enemy upon it to disturb us. What more did we want? Why, after we have all we claim, do we send an army into Mexico, to plunder her citizens, and sack and destroy her cities? It is not in self-defence, for not a Mexican soldier is upon any soil we claim as ours. What excuse then, have we. None,- the supporters of the war themselves being judges. AUowing the Rio Grande to be our true boundary, neither interest, nor honor, true or false, required us to send our army beyond it. And the invasión of the European States by Napoleon was not a more high-handed broaohofnational honor, than our invaion af Mexico.- Ex.
