Iho Jtvennebeck Journal, a leading Whig paper of Maine, presents the folowing offer to Liberty men : " Now we say to our friends of the jiberty party, that while we have notthe emotest idea of abandoning our Whig )rinciples, we are ready to unite with iem in electing men, who will say to avery, not Thus far shalt thou go, but ïou shalt go no furlher, and when we ïave settled that question we shall see what can rightly be done ne.xt." To this the Liberty Standard very roperly replies, - " We hnzard nothing in answering for iberty men, that this proposition will not ven bé entertained by them. Their work s to abolish slavery ; and they will not t this late day take ofi their grappling rons and agree to sustain it as il is, with ie futile expectation of re-straining its urther progress. So feeble an issue vith that giant power would be perfectly seless, as our whole national history )roves. The only way even to stop its xtension is to attack its exislence ; nnd this attack, to possess suiïicient moral and political force, must be sustained by ie whole power of national politics.
