Senator Bagby of Alabama, on the floor of the Senate, Mannes Gen. Taylor for nccepting the capiiulntion of Monterey. One renson adduced by Taylor in hts own defenco was to spare the lives of many innocant womeh and children of the This stirs the hot blood of Senator Bagby's patriotism and he declares (as reponed in the N. Y. Obseiver,) "That in wnr we had nothingto do wüh taking care of the lives of women and children, He would rathcr see forty Mexican towns sncked than the life oi one Americnn child desiroycd. Gen. Taylor should have pushed his victory at Monterey, regardlesa of the blood that would have been shed by ïVWhat a school of vlrtue is war!- How wonderfully does it teach us tolove ourneighborasourself! " Forty Mexican towns sacked," and forty thousand Mexican livea sacrificed would beasplendid,- a glorious scène ;- but this patriotie man has tears for the loss of ono Atnericnn child !
