The papers contain ruinors thot n, battle has been foüght at Saltillo, bctween Gen. Taylor with G.000 men,, and Santa Anna with 20,000,in which tho Mexicans were defeated. Thiá may be so ; but ii is useless to describe the particulars of ie battle whilc nothing is known aboiit it. - But in a week or two we shall doubt lesshavo important news from the seat of war. OC The Sonóte of Delawarc did not concurwith the House in passing the bill for tho gradual abolition of Slavery, but laid it on the table, by a vote of 4 to 4. - Thus the bill was lost by one vote. That it will pass at no distant day, cannot be doubted. Mr. Calhoun, in his estímale of the strength of the Slave and Free States, counts Delaware among the lntter, and it may properly be classed among them. The number of slaves in the State is about 2,000, and is diminishing every year. - Tne coming over of Delaware to the Free States will diminish the strength of the Slave States 3 votes in the Electoral College, ar.d add 3 to the aggregate of the Free States. G?" Mr. McClelland has forwarded tn us a copy of his speech on the 3,000,000 bill. His Dosition Was that he favored the Wilmot Proviso, but should vote for the bill whether it were adopted or not. []o was opposed to the extensión of the Missouri Compromiso line. The speech exhibiis no remarkable feature', elihough it has a son of antislavery look. It vindicates the power of Congress to forbid Slavery in the Territories, and goes into a history of the Ordinance of 1787, which is said to have origïnnted with Mr. JefFerson, and was sustained by votes of southern members of Cor.gress05 The bilí to prevent kidnapping, the substance of which we stated some woeks since, was not lost in the Pennsylvania Senate, but pnssed a full session of that body without opposition, and without nny debate. At the latest dates, the bül was in the hands of the Governor. (L The Tribune says thnt the act in relation to fugitivo slaves, which was be fore the Legislature of Rhode Island, passed both Houses previoüs to the adjournment of that body. It is similar to the law of Massachuselts in iU provisiones (t" Tho numberrof emigrants thatarrived in th? United States from foreign countriesf by way öf the Atlantic coast, in the year ending Sept. 30, 1846, was 156,643, of whom 00,763 were males, and 66,778 were females. 98,883 landed in New York.
