A unión on this point he thought would save a great explosión hereafter. - We subjoin a sentence : "Mere, sir, isa clinpter of política] inconsistency whicb demands the considevation of the country, and is not unlikely to nttract the attention of the age. - lï it be any thing but party attachment, carriocl i'ecklessly to every cxieut, and party anlipathy innddened inlo insanity, I know not how to describe it. Before we ohtain perfect right to conquered territory5 thero nuist be a cession. A cession can only bc made by treaty. No treaty can pass the Senate, till the cunstitulion is overthrown, without the consent of two-thirds of its membcrs. Now, who can shut his eyes to the great probability of a successful resislance to any treaty of ccssion from onequarter of the Senate oranother? Wil] the North consent to a trealy bringing in territory subject to slavery ? Will the Señale consent to a troaty bringing in territory from which slavery is exclüded ? Sir, the future is full of difTicultiesand full of dangers. - We are suffering to pass the golden opportunity for socuring harmony and the stnhilitv of the constitutioli. Wc appenr-- J II to bo rushing upon périls headlong, and wi;h our eyes open. Bul I put iny trust in l'rovidonce, and in thut good senseand patriolism of the people, which will vet, I hope, arouse tliemselvos beforo it is too late."
