We liad, lnst evcning, a singular, but sad illustration of the force and power of prejudice, over lbo conduct of professcdly enliglitericil American Republicao. - To relieve ihetedium ol'n ery proiracL cd pnssage across the Lake, (Eriej a iriend from Union City, " a democratie abolilionist" as lie statcd, (by the way Mr. Editor, did yon ever know a true, 7iori7irnbolitionist but was a true den Cratf) invited your sorvant to deliver a & lecture in the cabin. The proposal, it soems, had been made among the passengen, and the matter was arranged mostly, before the lecturer was consulted. Tlie invitation liaving been aecepted, theCapt. ' was consulted, nnd readily assented, (aithougli as lie .aid, and as there is no doubt, he is no abolitionistj. The cabin was accordingly arranged afier ten, and nearly all Uip passengers, some thirty or forty in number assembled - and tlie . ture commenced. But before proceeding far, the gentlemen Whigs and Deinocrals begnn to withdravv in eiv'dent bod tempei' - and why do you suppose they ■ere thus hnstily driven from the lecture? Because tlic locturer insisteJ, nnd nttemped to prove, that the Constitution of the United State riglitly and properly construed, is au antislavery instrument, and carries with it, the elements and power to abolish the evil. Ti-uth compels me to acknowledge there was at least one passenger on board from our neighboring countv, who dare not come nto cabin during the lecture, evidently for fear he would hear trulhs which would cross his prejudice, and convince him agnint his will. But poor man, he is a (quasi) democratie qfficcholder - and this 1 suppose, proof asit is, must je his apology. But, thank God, there wero some who stood and heard, ulthough probably, there was not a single Liberty party abolitionïst on board; therefore seed has been sown
