We havo received a letter from aolergyman in nne of the most remóte & inacr.essible of tlio stave Stntes, whose well known name, if we were permitted '.o publisli it, would ndd weiglit and"impressiveness to vvhat he says, wh'ch we cannot deny ourselves the gratificaron of presenting to ihose who are waiting forthe dawn of right feelings and views on this subject at the South. Thnt there is an undhr-current of feeling nl the South sTïch as letter discloes, is as unqueslior.aWe as it is cheering : " Yon know the self-will of despotism nnd the fnrlorn hope of a poor disciple of Christ, in ende.avoring to turn t Trom its current. We mny talk of Tnrkish despot sm as we písate, it is not more dictntoi ial, obstinate, zealous and tvrannical, th.-in the despntism of j 'r cc, enüghlcned, Christian Slcn-eri .' ! Disgime it as you wül, it is a monster. Some very gorxi deluded men, ('and I too, oncej have apologized tur i í ; but after n]l, it is, and ivas, and ever will be, a sin condemned by God, abhorred by sniivs, and shwnncd by holy men. The circumstances of m_v fnmily srem to reqoire that I should remain at ths South, tliough soinetimes I almost resolvo to leave this región, felfear ihe smothered hoaving voloano mav break fbrth, and bury in ruin this otherwisc lovely land. But there ir some hright streaks of hope. The irifiuences of religión are gaining ground, and as they gain ground masters treat their servants botter in dress, and gram them more Christian privileges. And this is not nll: owners begin to feel that slavery is asi. A few wicked men, Cslaveholdersj hnve said to me at ditrerent times, that they did not see vvhat business Christians had to como nero r.nd buy plantations and negroes, intimating that thero is, in their estimnlion, a s'a'g inconsistency betwecn religión and slavery. Thev justify themselves in slavery, because they do not profess to obey the Bible. They say a man cannot do to oihers as he would that they should do to him, and hold slaves. Dut in them this is only one among all their other sins. Strange rcasoning, but quite as logical as the reasoning of fessors of religión, in excusing and 'wtifying their continuance in sin. One thing is evident - the sin of slavery is feit more anH more. Tliis sliould encoungo Christinns to pi'ay with fresh eaniestncss and strenglh, that God may pour oul lipón usa spirit of judgment - a spirit of, burning, (hnt thpl evil mny bc
