Tü the shame of ths Church il must be spoken, the foremost men in some of our philanthropic mnvennnts, in the interpretntion of the spirit of the fige, in tlie practical apptications of Christianity, in the refürmation of abuses, in the vindieatiori of the righis of man, are men who make no profession, and wbofu we have no reason to believe to be experimento ily acquainted with Christianity. The Church hns pusillanimously lefi not only the wurking oar, but the vei-y reins of certain necessary reforms of the day in tne hands of men who, ifnotbefore nimical to Christia&ity, will be made so by Christianity's neg'ect of what it is its proper mission to look ofter. They nre doing practically with I1 their might,for Immanity's sake. what the Church ought to be doing as heartily, through minUtry and representative men, fjr Christ's sake. Ar.difthev succeed, ns succeed they will, in abolishins slavery, in banishing ntf mperance, in trilling war, in restrnining licentiousness, in reforming social sbuses, then the recoil upon Ohri.-tianity, the antagonist reaction from these Christianized sensihilities upon the cau.se of religión itself, will be disnstrous in the extrema. Woe be to religión, when irreligious men, by force of nature or the tfindency of the age, get ahead oflhe Church in moráis and in the practical work of Christianity. In some instances, they are a long way ahead. And we might Specifiy individuáis and journals in this country that ae far before llie rec'igmzed organs of the Church, iu the advocacy of trulh and righteousness and liberty. It would be diflicuk lo say wbether there is the more difgrace or dangerin a fact like thts. In disseminating information on these points, on which great ignorance nrevails, it is doing a good work in the community.
