- An action of indemtiiiy was brought bcfore llie U. S. Circuit Court at its recent sessions at Pittsburgh, against Dr. Mitchell, of Indiana county, by a slaveholder named Vnn Meter, of Virginio. The Doctor was cliarged wilh having harbored and coneealed a slavo belonging to the estáte of Joseph Inskeepe, and suit was brought to recover damages, laid at $500. A number of witnesses were called to prove that the slave had been seen on the Dr. 's premises, and in his employ, and that be knew of his liaving been a slave, tho properly of Inskeepe. One of the witncsscs - David Ralstnti, sheriff of the county - nppeared very anxious to have tho Dr. convicted, and accoriiing to his own testimony, volunteercd his services to aid in the arrest of the Slave - who, however. escaped from the clutches of' his pursuers. In the Court, the prosecutor foiind a'l that he could have desired ; and the Jury were cliarged to lay oside all views of philanthropy, of human liberty and religión, and be governed solbly by the Conbtitution, which heexplained as gu.iranteeing to the master the right of property in bis slare. After the charge 'of tho Court, the Jury retired; but they could nut agree on a verdict, and 'were d.:scharged. Il s stated that a inajoriiy were fur conviciion; butlhere were t bree "impracticable" abolitionists whose notions of rig'it and wrong would mU permit them to unite in such a decisión. A ncw trial, we presume, wlll take place. - Mercer (Pa.) Luminary. Sendino Money West. - Th. Cleveland Plain Dealer stntes that Livingston & Fargo's Express donr, have brought to that city within the last two montha, over one million dollars, mostly in Eastern curre-ncy, fur the purpose of purchasing produce. - Probably, as much more has been sent there by private hands. Jesuits. - The royal governmont of Prague has decreed that the Jesuits shall notbe permitted to reside in the capital of that kingdom. Fined foh atteMptixg it. - William Snyder, a married man in Btillwator N. J.,has been iuied $10 andcosts, for commiiting an assault and batlery upon Miss Phebe L. Allen, with intent to kiss her. What would have been tho penalty if he had succeeded ? He would have got clear, of course. An Iiush Beguar. - An Irishman, who had been begging pitoously, was taken up before the Warrington rnagistrates the other day, and on searching him nothing was found but a large ball of soap. He prayed they would not take that from him, as "he liked to be clnan, though ho was poor." The eamestness ofhisentreaty led the gentlemen to cut the piece of soap in two ,and insido was found L16 ia gold. The End. Col. Davis, writing to the Alton Telegraph from Jalapa, says: The beginning of the end has not yet beenseen; and many is the battle yet to be fought, and many are the livesstill to be sacrificed, before that peace is conquered, which, in the estimation of those who plunged the nation into war, was to have ensued ere six months had transpired irom the time the first gnns were fired upon the plain of Palo Alto." "Glorious" War. - The Mississippi Volunteers when they went to Mexico, numbered about 1000 ; and now, after a year's service, the regiment returns with 248 men! having lost three-quarters of their original number!
