■It is diffieult to aee to what perfection the manufacture of glass may bo brought, and to what purposes thearticle may be applied. The balance spring of a chronometer is now made of glass, as a substitute for steel, and possesses a greater dogree of elasticity and a greater power of resistin-g alterations of heat and cold. The farmer's life is shunned by many because tl teems one of endless drudgery. It ought not lo be so. If our furmers would stuJy and refiect more, they might do less hard labor, and yet acoomplish more in thecourse of a year. Ten hours wolk in suminer, anc! eight ia winter, ought, with good management, to give to any mnn a good living. He who works so hard that he cnnnot read or reflect ter ihe labors of the day are over,beeause of fatigue, does not plan wisely. Let no man shun work when work should be done ; but delve, delve forever, is not the end of mnn's life. The farmers' evenings should be devoted to mental acquisition and rational enjoyment. To sip and tumble into bed is a hog's fashion, and highly injurious to health. But let a farmer l.ave about him the choicest works of his ovvn auxiliaiy avocations ; let these form the subject of study and conversation at least wo evenings in a week, while, the newcst and olJett volume, each have their alloited seasons. Two or three dollars contributed by each in a neighborhood or school dtstiict, would go a great way in the purehase of standard books at modern prices.
