-A ivorlhy young man by the name of Carpenter, whi lived a few miles north of Ml. Pleasaut, was tnurdered on Saturday morning last, in the most shocking inanner, by a slave whorn he was attempting to chastise. - The negro wasarmed with mi a.e, and our informant states that Carpenter was literally " choppfcd to pieces" by the demon - receiving many heavy blows from the edge of the axe on the shoulders, back -and other paits of his person, any one of wbich would have produced death. The murderer was immedialely npprehended and would have been burntat ihe stake by the exasperated citizcns, had he not belonged to a widow lady, whose circumstances are such. that she camiot sustain the loss with serious iujury to her means of support, unless compensated by the pubücamhorities.
