A good wife is one who regulates her disposition nccording to the fortunes of her husband, who, when he is depressed in spirit, exercises all those peculiar properties for which women are di.tinguislied, endeavoring to lighten the burden of his melancholy, and prove to him that whatever may g wrong in the outdoor world, in her, he may always expect sympathy and support. A good wife is one who.at all times and upon nll occasions,is willing to share the destiny of her husband, provided that husband has not forfoiled every claim to her respect nnJ añections by tho brutalily or unmanliness of hisconduct. She must bend over him in patint attention, ia his hour of sickness; wipe the feverish drops from his brow, and smooth the pillow of his anguished moments. She must repel ihe most remote approaches to a libel of his character, watch carefilly over his worldly goods, nnd preserve í'rom wastcond sprndthrift all that he hoards up with palience and toil. She musí as far as io her lies, meet him with kind feelings and outstretcheil nnns froin his daily vocation ; be equally guarded of her person as ftbe sacred knot had not been tied - treat with becoming reserve the insidious familarity of the licentious and the depraved - and ever act in the company of others with the fondness of a wife, yetwith the dignity of a high-souled ornan. The preservation of her husband's aiTections must be a matter of paramount importance to the enlargement of his fortune. She must study his disposition, and never irrítate lus irritable parts - she must love her chihiren, & ieach them so to conduct themselves as to shed honor on their father's name. She must waikinsuch a way before the world that cal umny may never reach her, for in her preservation of an unsullied name, she not only contributes to the happiness, but the honor of her husband. lf her disiositiiii is na'urally violent, its violence should all be turned into the channel of affection, and above all, she should never give way to momentary anger, nor be warped in her opinions as to t'ie fidelity and honor of her husband, by the represenlation ofanother. These are what we shouid deern some of the qaalihcaiions of a good wife.
