A meeting to nomínate Gen. Taylor for President, was held in Detroit a few evenings since. It seems to have Leen productive of any quantities of fun. John Norvell presidod, and D. E. Harbaugh was Secretary. Among tlio speakers wore Geo. C. Rntes, [J. H. Emmons, Da. vid Sluart, and Mr. El lis. We find but litlle that will interest our readers. We will observe, bowever, that Mr. Emmons lins been known in tliis State somevvhat extensively as an anti-slavcry Whig ; yel the report before us slates that he declnred in this meeting ihat he was in favor of Gen. Tnylor's nomination : that the General was a good Whig, nnd lie vould support him as a Whig. We wonder if Mr. Emmons stilí keeps on hand those fac!s and documents Ibrrnerly used by hini, showing the ascendency of llie Slave Power, nnd the extont of Southern domination. At this meeting, Mr. E. wished lo iniroduce a resoKition declnring thal Gen. Taylor was opposed to the Polk doctrine on River and Harbor improvements : yet the views of Gen. Taylor on the "Polk docirine" of extending the area of slavery, and carrying on wars of coriquest for its aggrandizement, spem tohave exerted no especial interest in his mimi as we do not find the VVilmot Proviso principie even referred to by him. 05a All kinds of rumors and sta!emen!s rospecting the Mexicnn war come to us, often in the same pnner. No one enn teil which is certninly true. The best we can do is to give them as they come. 05a A story is going the rounds that Gen. Toylor told eomebody lntely in Montercy, that he should not ndvan e on San Luis Potosi, bilt should positively resign on the first of September.
