We find a eral rrgret among the peoplr-, tliat llie Rcvised Slalmes have not given to the County Courts jurisdicüon over criminal nctions as we!l as civil. We have now in our county jail sovne 4 or 5 persons to be kppt ;it ■ lieavy expende to the county, untü the ne.xt session of tho circuit eport, to be held in December nevt. Would not itbe botier for all concerned to have them tried immedialely, than to be so long kept. Ifguilty, the quicker they are at the Sate Prison Ihe better ; if ■innocent, ihft quicker tltat fact is ascortained, and they set at liberty, the better. The county court, meeting oncea month or oftener. when nece'-sary, coul.l disposo of those cases at once, without any delay, whilstthe circuit court meets but twice a yo-.r. and are oí'ten kept waiting the wliole week, and at the end of the week the snit is pjt off for the want of a witness, making nnother delay of si months, whilst if put over in the county court it would be but forone montli. We u".derstand hatabill giving the county courls jurisdiction over criminal actions passed both House the close ofthe last session of the Legislature and wns pocketed by the acting Goverr.or.
