Saratooa SriuiGs, N. T. f Julr 7ib, J847. $ Dear Frieno Foster- I am sorry to see the spirit and tni manifpsted hy many of the Liberty papers towards what they chnracterize s (her "New Movemont." If wecannot at onca see alike, should, therefore, brotherly love discontinue ? Can we not, f we must pursue a different course, agree todifFer 1 We wnnljif possible, to see eye to eye on the great subject of civil government and its proper duties. Shall we be morp likely to harmonize in our vews by maligninjr and denouncing each other 1 We may thunder our anathemns against all wrong, and opprsssion - but let us "Be kind to each other, The n eins coming on When friend and when broiher Perchance may be gone: Then 'midstour dejwion, IIow weet to hnve oarneJ, The ble.'t rec-illection Oí kinducss rdirncr." Let us be irfluenced by no selfish considerntions or party spirit, but meet and candidly and Hiirly discuss the principies in difference between us with a determination to walk in the light we noio have, instend of thfi darkness we once had, and to follow the teachings of truti and right, ritlier than blind expediency and liuf(ling worldly policv. Let us see if it is best, in the light of experience, of reason and of revelation, tu bend all our mortal energiesto the overthrow of one species of wrong, to the neglect of all others! - Let ns see if it is not best to do all tha good we can ín exery relalion, and to every human interest. In short, to irnitate the exampleand follow ihe tnethod of ihe great and allwise Reformer himself- and oppose all wrong, and all injustice under thesun ; and labor to estab'ish such a government, and to secure such legislation and such laws, as shall protect all men in their equal, natural tights. A party seeking such an end, will be .. party of the whole - will the sooner secure the co-operation of the whole, as it sees the good oC the whole- and what is more, will be in harmony wiih ihe great cieator and law-giver of ihe whole. But you say the Liberty party was not formed to look after the rights of all men, - that is, it was not formed to do the duties of civil eminent, but simply and.solely lo overihrow ilavery. Admit for argument's sak that it was not formed for any oiher purpose than to abolish chattel lavery - what tlien 1 The temperance society was not formed with nny design of abolishing ihe use of viine, beer or eider ; nor did the friendsof the teraperance cause nlend or ex peet to carry tha quenion to the Dallot box. But experience, reason, common sensj and the Providcnce of God, all led them directly to adopt the comprehenShe principie, and exclude all. intoxicaling drink, and 10 go to the ballot box for the overthrow of the destructive traf fie in these poisons. Do reformers ge backhanded and downwards ; or npwardt and onwards ? The principies laid down and advocated all along by the Liberty party, f rom its ificipient forrrmtion until the present time, liad nnturally and lcgitimately o the position now luken by those engnged in whnt is called the nrw movvmenl - and wlio havo nominated ns 'heir representativas, Gerrit SMiTn and Eliiiu Burritt. And even though we did nol at the oül set, slart right, are we therefbre to continue wrong? Mav we not ckange ? ought we not to change when duty ahd cohviction demnnd il ? Shall we follow in the wake of the other part ties, or shall we show a more excellenay ? These parties profess to look after the interests of White men, nnd' trample on tho rights of black men. Slmll we only look añer ;he liberty of tha black man who ís in chains, and noglect other poor and degraded nnd oppressrd! black and white men ? Job, was not exactly a "one idea" man. He was a goo ruler, with ehtarged views, rrgnrding not the persons of men, or conffning his gorernmentnl care io any eme class of subjeefs. "I dsüvered the poor tint cried, and the fntherless, and him that had r.ono to help liiro. The blesing of him that was ready t perish carne upon me, and I caused ihe widow's heart to sing Tor joy. I was eyes to ihe blind, and leet to the lame ; I was a father 10 the poor, and tha cause whteh 1 knew not, l searched out - And I break the jaws of the wicked, and pljcked the sport out of his teeth." A party, to be blessed of God and be a Messing to the country, must umlertake to do for the whole penple, whnt civil government wns ordnined of heaven to do fur them. Such a party mtieb sooner than any other, will destroy staverv and other ïystems of oppicsaion and abuse, nnd etablish justicp, domeic tranquiüiy, and secure the blessjngs of liberty to us nrJ our postority. I tnusf rlse - J did nor ntfnd to tay to much. 1 want to s6 in"
vestigation, (Vee discussion, loleralion, and kindness. .My motto is - Excelsior. The weather lias been very fine at the Springs for a few d;iys, and visitera are pouring in fiom all quarters. Congress water ngroes with me well, and could 1 .remain here I have no doubt it would grently benefit my haallli. I hope you will pubüsh the Macedón nddress. I consider it one of the best polilical d cumeiV.s ever put forth in iliis country. Let people reod mid uilge for themselves. I am truly thy brother,
