A True Story. - It was one of llie first days of spring, wheu a lady who had been watching by the sick bed of her Tnother, for some weeks, went out to take a liltle exercise, and enjoy the fresh air. She lioped that she might hear a bird sing, or see some wild flower which would spenk lo her of fuiuie hope, for her heart was heavy with anxiety and sorrow. After walking for some ditance, she carne lo a ropewalk. She was famillinr with the place, and being fond of the smell of the-tar, she At onc end of the building, she saw a Hule boy turning a very large whoel ; she iliought it was too laborious work for such a child, and as she come near, she spoke to him. 'Who sent you to this place?' sheasked him. 'Nobody' 1 came of mvself.' 'Does your fatlier know that you are here?' 'I have io father.' 'Are you pnid for your labor? ' 'Yc-j, 1 get ninrpence nday.' 'What do you do with your money? ' 'I give it nll lo my mother.' 'Do vou Üke this wor k? ' 'VVell enough ; but if l did not, '■ should do it, that 1 miglit get money for my mother." 'How long do you work in the day ? 'From nine to twelvcin the morning Jindfrom iwotill five in the afternoon.' 'How oíd aro you 1 ' 'Almost nine.' 'Are you never tired of iurning this grpat wheel ? ' 'Yes, sometimes.' . 'And what do you do then?' 'I take the oiher hand.' The lady gave him a piece of inonêy. 'Is this for my mother V said he, lok ing plrased. 'No, itisfor yourself,' she replied. 'Thank you, ma'am,' the boy said, and the lady bade him farewel). She went home strengthened in her devotion to duty, and inslructed in true practical christian philosophy, by the example of a little child, and she said to herself, the next time that duty seemstoo hard for me, 1 will, like this little boy, not complain, but "take the other hand." Child's Friend. A Winter in Simtzbergen. - The interior of Spitzbergen has never been inhabi;able. Last October a party set out from Archangel for this destination. It was composed of fifteen gentlemen, of sound constitutions, accustomed to cold, and excellent huntsmen. They established themselves in the small Island of Barenis, part of the northern group where no man had yet resided, and which was only frequented by the more valuable of the animáis of the country. In a short time, however, six of thc.n, in spite of their precautions and hardy constitutions, died from the intense cold. The remainingnine lately arrived at Archangel with much booty, but not until they had experienced the most intense suflering from various causes, the absence of daylight being one of the principal. Emthasising VVords. - There is a good story on the subject of emphasis. - "Boy," said a visiter at the house of his friend, (o his little son, "step over the way and see how od Mrs. Brown is."
