The Rcpublicau United Staies, so far as we knovv, is the only Christtan nntioir that is pushing ts conquests for t!ie extensión of slavory, or framing ilslaws for the perpèluily of tint system. Thf "mosl enlightened nau'on on the face o! the earth," as we so ofien boa.-tingly proclaim ourselves, bids fair to l.e the last one to abolish the slavery of i!s own citizens, while every year we have edictso' emancipatïon issued from ilie coiirts of monarcns and despots. The Journal of Cornmerce of a late date has the following: "Lelters reoeived here by theCalednia, from unqíisstionnble sources, ar.nounce that, on ihe 28tli of July last, the King of Donmark issued a decreo, declaring that all persons who should iherealter be born in his dominiuns should be born free; and that all perrons in servitude in his dominions, on the 28ih of July lnst, and remaitifn'g po on the 2ilh of July 1859, shall thefi be aso'utety free wit'ioul compensation to the owners. "In tho neiotiation with ihe colonist.-i which prpC'ded the issuing of ihis deci'pe, he offered them the aliernative of thre yeür?, with a compensa-ion of $60 per hearj for each slave, or twelve y pars without any compensation, and they chose the latter. Denmark hns threesmall islands in ihe WestTndies, viz: St. Croix,St. Thomas, and St. John's. St. Croix con'ains nhout 30,000 slaves. St. Thomas and St. John's perhaps 5,000 more. OCf" The True Democrat comes to us this week, with a new head, and new type, presenting a much improved appearance. lt is one of the best Democratie papers in the State, and is to be commended for its honcst and persevering advocacy of popular reforms. But as a party paper - the supporter of a proslavery perty and enndidates, it de serves no praise or encouragement.
