In an other col'im, we give from the Chronoiype, a sketch of llie doing in part ot' this boiy. The conveimon, by ils paper resolution, havmg first deuhired ï'gnir.sl the anexntion of i.ew lerritory to the Unini, and in favor of apph ing, as tiie nliernaie, the principies cf the wilmot proviso to nny territ-iry tt'hlcli m:gln e anriexed, Hon. John (J. PalfbE tlien proposed to test the precise valué of ihese f.)o!s-cap declnraliofis, op, in othor words. to see il' ïhe whig party of Massachusett.wou'.d thow i;s faitli by its worUs. So, !ie s'ibiniüed the f illowing resoiutions : Eesidced, Ti.at ïhe Whigs of Massnchuset!s wül support to men as cnndatps tbrlhe offices of President and Vies President, but those who are known by their nc'.s ordeclared opinión lo be opposed to the extensión of shvery. At ihis, thaCotton Whigs took fire.nnd during the next two hours the coriflic' raged furiously between the two section of the party, cution beipg ld by Mr. Wintlirop.and conscience by Mr. Palfrey. The movpment of Mr. Palfiey nnd hs friends was vcry ernl)arrnsing to thai wing of the party, which up lo ihis lime has been able to hush the clamor of t'if anti-slaverv portion of its rnembers, bj' palming offupon them a vast amount of good vvoríls, to be subsequently lived down and n ilülïd by a rnultitnJe f bad deeds. His brief resolution coniemplated action, and was adaptad lo ascertain vhther the long slring of the cominiltee was introduced merely for swic, or for nctunl use. It wassimply saying to the cotton wing, "all this talk is very good in (s place, gentlemen, bnt whal do you inlend to do about these maners I" This was applying the probé to a tender spot. The coiton lords, through their packed committee, having humbled themselves to sny many things which they did not b" ieve, about new lerritory, the proviso, tlavery, &c, ir. order to please their brethren o) the olher wing, and secure uuion, ol course thought it not only unkind, but very audacionsin them to strip ofl'lhe ve.l of hypocrisy which the whig party bf Massachuselts has so long worn, and expose ils duplicily before those whom n had so long deceived. No wonder il flared up at a moveuent which directly tended to rob the pariy of that g od name, on which it had so succesfulíy done business in the loaves and fishes ol' office, nnd obtained tlie votes of the people by fulse prelences. The debate was warm and exciling. - Emancipator. There are forty four lawyers in the new PjrliameDt.
